Confirmatory Characteristics of Anopheles Mosquito :
Like all mosquitoes, adult Anopheles species have slender bodies with three sections: head, thorax and abdomen. The head is specialized for acquiring sensory information and for feeding. It contains the eyes and a pair of long, many-segmented antennae.
1).Sitting position:
🎯When seated it makes an angle with the wall so that its body is in a straight line.
🎯When viewed from the side, the mosquito's forelegs are across the suction tube.
2). Wing Structure:
Black and white spots are found on the wing veins of the female Anopheles mosquito. The color changes in the veins give the wing its unique character. Helps identify species of Anopheles mosquitoes.
(3) Head Variations :
The attachment joints in the antennae of Anopheles male mosquitoes have long bundles of hairs. They look like a mustache and this structure is called plumose.
Anopheles female mosquitoes have short hairy bristles at the attachment joints in the antennae. Quut called pilose system for this system
Anopheles male mosquito & Anopheles female mosquito
The palpi of Anopheles female mosquito is similar to the length of its suction tube, but the palpi of Anopheles male mosquito is similar to the length of its suction tube and the tip of the palpi is thick and large (Chub shaped).
4). Hard disk structure:
At the posterior end of the scutellum, the margin is rounded and crescent-shaped, with a row of hairs. The back end of their hard scales is crescent-shaped (Scutellum).
The posterior end of the scales is crescentic
🎯There are no abdominal stripes
🎯 They do not make much noise in flight
Sedentary and blood feeding activities of Anopheles mosquitoes :
🎯Anopheles mosquitoes are generally most active during the dusk and dawn hours.
🎯Some are active in the middle of the night.
🎯Some Anopheles mosquitoes suck (endophagic) the blood of humans or animals inside houses.
🎯But some Anopheles mosquitoes suck the blood of humans or animals outside their homes (exophagic).
🎯Some Anopheles mosquitoes sit indoors (endophilic) after a blood meal and digest the blood at rest.
🎯But other Anopheles mosquitoes sit outside their houses (exophilic) after a blood meal and digest the blood at rest.
🎯Some Anopheles mosquitoes are zoophagic. But other Anopheles mosquitoes are anthropophagic.
🎯Thus the microconductors are the breeding grounds of mosquitoes. Knowing the blood-feeding, active activities can be very useful in controlling them during periods of fumigation and indoor residual-use insecticide sprays.
