 is a common insect found worldwide in association with humans and their waste. Though often considered a nuisance, it plays an important ecological role in decomposing and recycling organic matter. However, its behavior of feeding and breeding on filth allows it to spread numerous pathogens to humans and animals. 

Life cycle 

House flies undergo a four-stage process of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (maggot), pupa, and adult. The entire life cycle can be completed in as little as seven to ten days under optimal conditions, allowing for numerous generations in a single year. 

• Egg: A female fly lays 75 to 150 white, rice-shaped eggs at a time, often on moist, decaying organic matter such as manure, garbage, or carrion. She can lay up to 500 eggs in her lifetime.
• Larva (Maggot): Within a day, eggs hatch into legless, pale-whitish larvae, or maggots. The maggots feed on the surrounding organic matter, developing and molting three times over several days.
• Pupa: Once mature, the larvae migrate to a drier, cooler location to pupate. The pupal case, formed from the last larval skin, is reddish-brown and hard. This inactive stage lasts several days, during which the fly undergoes metamorphosis.
• Adult: The mature fly emerges from the pupal case and is ready to reproduce within hours. Adult house flies typically live for about 15 to 25 days. 
  
  
  

Diet and feeding habits 

House flies are attracted to a wide variety of substances, including feces, rotting produce, and sugary foods. Since they do not have chewing mouthparts, they must consume all food in liquid form. 

To eat solid food, a house fly first regurgitates saliva and digestive juices onto the surface. The enzymes in the saliva break down the food into a semi-liquid state, which the fly then laps up with its spongy mouthparts. 

Disease transmission 

Because of their habit of moving between filth and human food, house flies are effective mechanical vectors for numerous pathogens. They can spread disease in two primary ways: 

1. Carrying pathogens externally: Pathogenic organisms cling to the tiny hairs and sticky pads on the fly's legs and body. When the fly lands on food or other surfaces, it can transfer these microorganisms.
2. Spreading pathogens internally: Pathogens can survive for several days inside the fly's digestive tract. The fly then spreads these pathogens through its regurgitation and defecation. 

Diseases known to be transmitted by house flies include: 

• Typhoid fever
• Dysentery
• Cholera
• Salmonellosis
• Tuberculosis 

Control and prevention 

Effective management of house flies involves sanitation, exclusion, and other control methods. 

• Sanitation: This is the most crucial step. Eliminating breeding sites by regularly and properly disposing of garbage, manure, and other organic waste is key to controlling the population.
• Exclusion: Keeping flies out of buildings by installing tight-fitting window and door screens is an effective barrier.
• Traps: Fly traps, such as sticky ribbons or ultraviolet light traps, can help reduce indoor populations.
• Insecticides: While various insecticides can be used, many fly populations have developed resistance, making sanitation a more effective long-term solution.
